Filipino boxer Nonito Donaire beat Zsolt Bedak to successfully defend his WBO World Super Bantamweight title on Saturday.
In the homecoming match at the Cebu City Sports Complex in the Philippines, Donaire notched a third-round technical knockout win over the overmatched Bedak.
The 33-year-old boxer knocked down the former Hungarian Olympian twice in the second round and again in the third round. He scored three knockdowns which led to a successful defense of the WBO super bantamweight title.
Though Bedak survived to the third round, he was staggered by a left hook from Donaire which forced him to his knees. Before any injury could be caused, the referee Russell Mora called time and ended the bout at 2:44 of round 3.
It was a mismatch. Donaire, with his lightning-fast fists, was able to easily sway Bedak with left hooks, left uppercuts and counters.
The four-division champion said that he’s done competing with opponents of Bedak’s caliber, a mandatory challenger who was ordered by the WBO as reported in Boxing Junkie.
Moments after his win, Donaire told USA TODAY Sports:
“I didn’t get back into this title position to hold it to fight b- and c-level fighters. I want to be the best. I want to fight the best. And I’m willing to fight anybody — (Guillermo) Rigondeaux, (Carl) Frampton, (Hugo) Ruiz. You name it.”
Following the title of 2012 Fighter of the Year from the Boxing Writers Association of America, Donaire was entirely knocked down by the two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux in the WBA Super World Super Bantamweight belt in 2013.
Since then, Donaire has long wished to avenge that loss and is eager to prove himself with a world title in tow. He is one of the few boxers willing to fight Rigondeaux.
Donaire won the title with an unanticipated victory over Cesar Juarez in an exhausting December fight. He said that he was overconfident in that bout but being a champ brings a different mindset. He believes that he has much to improve on.
“Big difference. Everyone is gunning for you. That’s what I want. I have the power. If they want it, come get it.”
