British singer and rapper Dizzee Rascal has joined the hunt for the 73 year old legendary South West DJ who has been missing for almost a month and a half now.
Derek Morris, most popularly known as DJ Derek, is a Bristol based professional DJ who was reported missing earlier in July this year. The case came in the light when the worried family of the DJ informed police when they didn’t see or hear from him for more than three weeks.
DJ Derek, who has played hundreds of sets over the years and worked with high profile artists including Dizzee Rascal and Massive Attack, just disappeared without any trace. His family then finally decided to file a missing report. The DJ’s niece, Jennifer informed the authorities that they called in for help when her uncle didn’t turn up for nearly a month.
Now, it has been more than a month already and still there is no trace of the lost pensioner. A number of big names have joined the quest to find the beloved artist. And now, famous faces like Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank, Daddy G of Massive Attack have been joined by British rapper Dizzie Rascal.
Dizzee appealed to his 451 thousand followers on Twitter with a tweet: "Please help find the Legend DJ Derek I met him on set of my Dirtee Disco video, really nice guy I hope he's ok."
In 2010, DJ Derek featured on Dizzee Rascal’s Dirtee Disco video which brought the two famous musical sensations close.
Another artist Rob Da Bank added another message to Dizzee’s tweet: "On a serious note DJ Derek is missing... one of my favourite DJs ever... please read."
Several music artists have come together and joined hands to find DJ Derek who was last seen on July 10. But the police have not been able to track the whereabouts of DJ. Neither have they found any evidence to prove that he has been either abducted or hurt by someone. But if he was indeed kidnapped then there would surely have been a ransom call.
After weeks of Derek’s disappearance, his niece posted on his Facebook page, writing: "Spoken with police and there is nothing new to report!
"Extremely worried even more as the press and the social media in last 12 hours have gone crazy and still Derek as not been in touch.
"Where is he? I'm going out of my mind another sleepless night. Come home Derek!!!"
DJ Derek who spent his 40 years deejaying was formerly an accountant for Cadbury and became a DJ by accident in his mid-30s.
He is widely known for playing a blend of '60s rock-steady, reggae, ska, dancehall and soul music. His love of reggae and huge record collection initially turned him into a DJ after which he started deejaying at local pubs.
Police have requested everybody to call 101 if they get any information about his disappearance.
Dizzee Rascal’s appeal and support means a lot to the grieving family. The popular rapper, who has collaborated with singers like Shakira and Robbie Williams, partnered with Raymond Weil to reposition the brand amongst a younger generation. The Raymond Weil watch was featured in the video of hit track Dirtee Disco which garnered around 300 million views worldwide with over £7 million worth of exposure across MTV and other major music channels. No wonder that the rapper has a net worth of around $3.5 million.
